What was Beatlemania?

Beatlemania was a frenzied mass hysteria when Beatles fans, and teenage girls in particular,went crazy over The Beatles. (The word was first coined in the UK in 1963)

Beatlemania lasted from 1963-1965, was when the Beatles were heard everywhere on the radio and TV and their albums upon release went to number one and the top five slots were all Beatles songs.

Beatlemania started again when the group arrived in the United States in 1964. It ended when they anounced that they would stop touring in 1966. Film footage of their famous gig at the Shea Stadium gives an idea of the nature of Beatlemania.

There have been periodic revivals of interest in the Beatles, but this has fallen far short of real "Beatlemania". For instance:

When the band split in 1970, a small form of Beatlemania erupted and again when John Lennon was assassinated in 1980. When Oasis released their first album in 1994, many fans bought old Beatle albums which could be described as Beatlemania. Other forms of Beatlemania were when George Harrison died in 2001 and when Cirque de Soliel performed Love which contained many Beatle songs in 2006-2007. Beatlemania is expected to return in September of 2009 when the Beatles: Rock Band game is released.

In many ways Beatlemania has never ended and it certainly did not end in 1966 because they stopped touring.Beatle concerts would be considered a joke by todays standards as their music could not be heard because of the crowd noise,It was a source of frustration to them as they were musicians first and foremost.1966 was the year of Sgt Peppers then in 1967 Magical Mystery Tour.

'68 was The Beatles followed by Yellow Submarine,Abbey road and Let it Be,all #1 albums.If they were performing concerts during this time it would have been met with the same insanity as their other concerts.John Lennons death had a profound effect on the world and still does.

Perhaps the kids that were a part of the original craze have mellowed but in many ways the Beatles changed the world.The Beatles are widely considered to be the greatest band of all time and if that isn't a testament to the longevity of Beatlemania then nothing else could be. The Beatles are adored everywhere on earth,may they always be.
