Arguably the most famous Buddhist is the Dalai Lama.

Lumbini, a city in Nepal where Gautam Buddha was born.
Buddha is "famous" in the same way as the Christian Jesus is "famous". Buddha was a well known and respected person at his birth, he was after all a Prince. As he grew and became enlightened he became well known for his teaching on the escape from suffering and the cycle of death and rebirth He continued to be respected for his teachings from that time until now and will continue to be respected and well known for years to come. So the answer is Buddha started out his life 2500 years ago as a "famous" person and remains so today.

The Great Buddha (Daibutsu ) also known as the kotokuin
Some of the most famous Buddhist temples include the Shwedagon Pagoda in Myanmar, known for its stunning golden stupa, and the Mahabodhi Temple in India, which marks the site of Buddha's enlightenment. The Jokhang Temple in Lhasa, Tibet, is a significant pilgrimage site, while the Temple of the Emerald Buddha in Thailand showcases intricate architecture and the revered Emerald Buddha statue. Additionally, the Todai-ji Temple in Japan is famous for housing a giant Buddha statue and its impressive wooden structure.
There are lot of different versions of the Buddha that are Buddha's to come, those are called bodishaphas (not sure if I spelled that right so don't quote me on that). The only one I really know about is the happy Buddha, but the Happy Buddha is a fat man with long ears. This is not always the case but in the statue I have, he is sitting with one ha on his knee the other held aloft. He is definitely one of the more famous Buddhas (besides Siddhartha Gotamma).
