He helped prove that airplanes were capable of crossing continents and oceans. He helped people of the 1920s and 1930s take civilian aviation seriously. Many people knew about airplanes being good for short trips and joyriding around your home airport, but this was different.

By the way, many people think Lindbergh's 1927 accomplishment was "flying across the Atlantic Ocean." It was more than that. He flew across NON-STOP, ALONE, and he flew across a much wider part of the ocean than other pilots had ever crossed. The distance from New York City to Paris, France is much longer than to cross the Atlantic a lot farther north, leaving from St. Johns, Newfoundland Island, Canada, flying over Greenland and Iceland, and landing in Ireland. The first airplanes to cross the Atlantic not only took that northern route, but they stopped along the way to refuel.
