Columbus NEVER landed in North America. He didn't know it existed. He landed in the Bahamas. In the late 1700's the Italian American's began the story that Columbus landed in America so they could get a special day and parade like the Irish American's for St. Patrick's day. Columbus was not Italian, but Spanish. This is how history is changed.
Well, Columbus had three ships with a crew of a couple of hundred men; does that count? After him, other explorers like Henry Hudson and a host of Spanish explorers. Even before Columbus, there was Leif Erickson and his Vikings, and the Vikings who sailed to Vinland in Labrador, or the Irish monks who were rumored to have sailed from Ireland to North America.
In the Irish language, Críostóir [kreestór] = Christopher. In the Scottish Gaelic Crìsdean [kreeshtan] is equated with Christopher, Cairistìona [karishtcheena] with Christine/Christina. 'Chrissie' would be Criosaidh[krissee].
The Irish have been coming to America ever since the British set up colonies. Their was even at least one Irishman sailing with Christopher Columbus on his voyage to the West Indies. However, the largest number of Irish immigrants started arriving between 1845 and 1852, the years that the Great Famine took place. The Irish came over in large numbers at this time because the British did to little to help them during the Great Famine, which was when potatoes, the main crop grown in Ireland, became infected with fungus, making it inedible. Many people starved and died of hunger during The Famine. Even after the Great Famine ended, many Irish people still came over to the USA because of the Catholic-Protestant and the British-Irish conflicts.
The Irish language version of Christopher is Críostóir[kreesthór];the Irish version of Christine is Cristín [krisht'yeen] or Cristíona [krisht'yeena].
