Dame Nellie Melba ( real name Helen Porter Mitchell) was an Australian operatic singer of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. She was Damed ( feminine equivalent of knighthood)- by Queen Mary sometime shortly after World War I, having been active in various charitable and Propaganda actions during the war. She was Australian. Another Australian operatic singer who was raised to the status of Dame was the late Joan Sutherland, who died last year, and this received relatively little media attention. Melba peach and Melba Toast are named in honor of the Australian Diva ( Dame Nellie Melba).
