Before he actually BECAME king at 30 years old(2 Samuel 6:4), however, he was a musician in King Saul's court(1 Samuel 16:18-23), who wrote music and actually MADE instruments(2 Chronicles 7:6/2 Chronicles 29:26+27/Amos 6:5) and a soldier in Saul's army(1 Samuel 18:5-7).
