At first, David served as the leader of Saul's army, and also became a close friend of Saul's son Jonathan (1 Samuel ch.18), after he (David) had defeated Goliath (1 Samuel ch.17). Later, he became Saul's son-in-law, when he married Saul's daughter. See also:
