De Gaulle withdrew France from NATO's military command in 1966 and ordered all US troops to leave. Johnson reportedly asked his Secretary of State, Dean Rusk, to enquire whether the order included the bodies of American soldiers in France's cemeteries. According to Rusk's autobiography, the not-particularly-snappy line was "Does your order include the bodies of American soldiers in France's cemeteries?"
