He was one of the first three Catholic priests to celebrate Mass in Australia, when it was a penal colony. He was a prisoner himself, having the misfortune of being Irish and Catholic during the Irish Rebellion of 1789. Based on what I've read about him, I'm not sure if he actually did anything that could be considered "rebellious" towards British rule, or was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
