Researchers from the University of Florida working with the athletic department came up with an electrolyte drink that would help rehydrate athletes better than water. Because the mascot of U of F is the Gator, they called the drink Gatorade. it is possible that they determined that the name of the drink should be Gator-ade, perhaps as a play on the drink name lemonade(lemon being the first flavor developed), and a pun on the word aid and suffix-ade.
