After leading his corps to the flank attack that rolled up Hooker's right flank, and led to the rebel victory, Jackson was wounded by his own men while checking the positions of the two armies that night. There were reports of Union cavalry about that night, and an over eager North Carolina regiment fired on Jackson's party. Jackson died of pneumonia several days later, after amputation of his left arm.
