He was escorting a French diplomat and an Native American guide killed the diplomat. Because Washington was in charge he had to assume responsibility for the death. He signed papers admitting to the death ( they were in French and he couldn't read or write French. Washington didn't want to admit this since all gentlemen could read/write French).
