He was not a what but a who. He was a Portuguese prince who patronised seamen to find new routes to the Indies. He helped them to take voyages along the western coast of Africa. He never took a voyage himself. He was a Renaissance man with lot of knowledge, ambitions, and curiosity. He founded the first schol of navigation where seamen were taught navigation, cartography, and asrtonomy. He also founded the first observatory.
