He was the messenger of the Olympians, and carried news and messages between Olympians, and from Olympians to mortals. He was appointed as messenger by Zeus. He was worshipped for several reasons, but the main one was probably travel. Before they went on a long journey, people would pray for safe delivery by Hermes. They prayed for him to guide them and show them the way. Guidance stones or "Herms" were placed at crossroads and as boundaries and markers and landmarks in the wilderness to help people find their way. This sort of practice was very useful to avoid disputes over land in ancient times. He was also known as the Olympian most beloved of shepherds, and they prayed to him to protect their flocks. You can read a lot more about this in my book called "Hermes the Olympian" available on Amazon.
