The Declaration of Independence was an open letter to the king telling why the colonies were declaring themselves free of the king. He used for his foundation thinking the philosophy of John Locke in the opening statements. To state that people had the "God given" right to decide their government was a revolutionary idea. For thousands of years kings ran the world telling others how they were going to live. Jefferson's ideas turned the world on it's head by removing the power of the King. It took 6 edits before Congress would approve the Declaration. John Adams and John Jay took part in the process. Even though the document was published in July 1775 it wasn't approved until October. The king basically saw it as a temper tantrum and it wasn't until Bunker Hill he knew it was at war.
