Jesus was accused of 'many things' in his trial before Pilate, particularly what amounted to treason for claiming to be King. In his trial before the Sanhedrin, the accusation was of blasphemy due to His claims to be the Son of God.

Jesus was accused of being king of the Jews and as such undermining the authority of the Jewish elders who organized the Jewish faith. The Jewish elders were the one's responsible for sending their accusations to the Roman government in Judea. The governor in charge of Judea, Pontius Pilate, was uneasy about condemning a man who did not do anything wrong under Roman law but needed quell the rioting mob of Jews that the Jewish elders assembled. Pilate had the elders seek the governor of Nazareth, Herod, because Jesus was from Nazareth and should be condemned by his own leader. But Herod did not do as the elders wished so they went back to Pilate to seek the execution that they had wished for from the beginning. Pilate had his hands tied and ordered for Jesus to be punished by whip and torture hoping that the Jewish elders would be happy. But he was wrong, they still kept up on the crucifiction of Jesus because of his blasphemy and Pilate had just one more trick up his sleeve. Because it was a certain holiday he was to let one prisoner go and had the mob of people rioting choose if they wanted Barberas a rapist, murdering heathen or Jesus who claims to the King of the Jews. The rioters picked Barberas and the sentencing for Jesus' death commenced.

The only crime that Jesus committed was to question the authority of the false prophets and priests. The position they bestowed upon themselves was not in accord with God's ways of bestowing authority upon a person, such as was given to Peter, James and John.

They knew that if the people were made aware of their self proclaimed authority they would be out of a job. Jesus had to go, he was therefore accused of proclaiming himself the son of God. This was, in short, considered to be the crime of "blasphemy".

According to Roman law as stated by Pilate, Jesus was innocent of any crime. Pilate said 'I find no fault in Him.' Jesus was sentenced to death because Pilate gave in to the pressure exerted on him by the Jews, not because he believed Jesus to be guilty of any crime worthy of death.

Answer:

Jesus was brought before Pilate, under the accusation of "treason" against the Roman government and Caesar's authority.

For three and a half years He had been preaching "the Kingdom of God," which all of Judaea had been expecting Him to produce, according to their expectations of prophecy.

Even the scribes and Pharisees, the Jewish leadership, hoped He would do it for a time, just to throw off Roman authority, which, they thought, would restore the Divine authority of God's Kingdom to Israel... and set themselves up in power.

Jesus' preaching, however, flew in the faces of the Jewish leaders more than anything else [God holds government leaders stringently accountable to the people for their actions], and their subsequent plotting to get rid of Jesus gravitated to the accusation of "treason" against the government of Rome based on Jesus' message of the coming Kingdom of God.

That way, they thought, His blood would have been on Roman hands... and not theirs... thus, leaving themselves guiltless before God.

Meanwhile, in the trial, Pilate queried Jesus about the accusation: "...Art thou the King of the Jews?" (Matt.27:11)

Rome was accustomed to quelling rebellions against its authority and attempts to overthrow it. And that was the question Jesus was facing at His trial... whether or not He was the wouldbe leader of one of these rebellions.

And when Jesus denied that His Kingdom was of that time [age]... and Pilate saw His utter disdain for the Jewish hierarchy: "...and when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, He answered nothing..." (verse 12)... which Pilate appreciated - Pilate, then, saw no guile in Him. And it was the paid and planted Jews in the crowd that called for and initiated the mob's chant for His death.

Shouldn't the name Jesus Christ be Jesus the Christ?

That is a wonderful question, but the Bible does not use much punctuation, so in reality, speaking of the grammar, it is suppose to be written Jesus, Christ. not Jesus Christ. As many references in the KJV of the Bible, is Christ Jesus, written correctly Christ, Jesus, or Jesus, Christ. It is referring to Christ.
