Surnames were not in regular use in first century Palestine, although various methods were used to differentiate people of similar or the same first name. For example James and John were described as the sons of Zebedee and later in Acts there is the house of Simon the Tanner to differentiate him from other Simons - especially as Simon Peter was there at the time.

Joseph may have been known as Joseph ben Jacob (ben being the Hebrew word for son) or Joseph the carpenter. This is not recorded in the New Testament.

It is also important to stress that Joseph was not the biological father of Jesus, since Mary was 'with child by the Holy Ghost.' So, technically speaking, Joseph was only a step-father or figurehead. Very little is known about him apart from the mentions in the early life of Jesus in Matthew and Luke. As Jesus was seen as Joseph's 'son' he would have been known as Jesus bar Joseph - the Jewish equivalent of 'son of' that we still use today in names like 'Johnson' - as surnames as such were unheard of in those days. Alternately he would have been known as Jesus of Nazareth (Jesus Nazarene?'), or even Jesus the Carpenter (Jesus Carpenter?). What IS certain is that Jesus' surname is not 'Christ'. This is his title - Jesus the Christ, Jesus the Messiah, Jesus the Anointed One all mean the same thing - in the same way that we say Queen Elizabeth or President Bush

It was Jesus' last name, which was Christ.

No. It was not. Christ was the title given to Jesus by his followers, it means in Greek (approximately) Messiah.

The closest to a surname Jesus would have had would have been either son-of-Joseph (bar Joseph) or of Nazareth.

Joseph's surname sort of IS Joseph. He is of the tribe of Joseph, and last names were not really needed, so his ONLY name (whether you call it first or last) was Joseph.
