The gospels say that Jesus was referred to by others as the Christ or Messiah (which both mean the Anointed One), the Son of God and even as Elijah or one of the prophets (Mark 8:28). Jesus often referred to himself as the Son of Man.

The history of this is interesting. It seems likely at the time Mark (the first New Testament gospel) was written, that it was desirable for Jesus and his followers not to call him the Son of God. However, outsiders such as demons or the high priest could do so, and readers would have understood, just as Christians do today. Similarly, the voice of God from heaven could call Jesus his beloved son and this does not create a problem for the Christian community at the time since no one could accuse God of blasphemy. We can see evidence of this careful differentiation in the parallel structure of Mark's Gospel:A . John explains the coming of Jesus (Mark 1:1-8)

B .The baptism of Jesus (1:9)

C . The voice of God from heaven, "Thou art my beloved son" (1:11)

D . The forty days in the wilderness as an allusion to Elijah and Moses (1:13)

E . The people were astonished at what Jesus taught (1:22)

F . Jesus casts out an unclean spirit (1:23-26)

-- Where he was brought up

N . The people misunderstand Jesus and he can do no mighty work (6:2-6)

O . Jesus sends out the disciples and curses those who will not receive them (6:7-11)

A' .The young man explains the departure of Jesus(16:6-8)

In the above table, God calls Jesus his beloved son twice, in matching events C and C' (Mark 1:11,9:7). As outsiders, demons call Jesus the Son of God in event H, but Jesus commands them to tell no one, then in matching event H' Jesus even questions why people call him good, as only God is good.

In event S, Jesus asks the disciples who others say he is, and the disciples reply that some say Elijah and others say one of the prophets. In the matching event S', the high priest is an outsider and can suggest that Jesus is the Christ and the Son of God.

In event T, Jesus asks the disciples who they say he is, and Peter says he is the Christ. But in event T', Peter denies him three times.

Event V is an example of Jesus referring to himself as the Son of Man, avoiding but perhaps implying the description as Son of God.

When Matthew was written, during the eighties of the first century, and even later when Luke was written, it was no longer a problem for Jesus to be referred to openly as the Son of God. Christianity and Judaism were parting company and the gospels no longer needed to consider Jewish sensitivities.

Jeshua is the Biblical name of Jesus.

Additional Comments:

A transliteration of the Hebrew, 'Joshua' or Yeshua which means 'God is salvation' hence His being dubbed the 'Savior,' is what Jesus comes to be in the pages of the English Bibles. He is called many things - names and titles in Scripture - here is one also found in Isaiah 7:14:

Matthew 1:22-23New International Version (NIV)

22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 "The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" (which means "God with us").
