He was a sailor in the United States Navy during the Second World War. He had a brief career in journalism, then became a congressman in 1946. In 1952 he became a US Senator. In 1955 (while still a senator) he published his Pulitzer Prize-winning book, Profiles in Courage. However one could argue that Kennedy had been an author since 1940 when his senior thesis, Appeasement in Munich, was published as Why England Slept. In 1960, JFK sought and was elected to the presidency. He was inaugurated in 1961 and served as President of the United States from 1961 until his assassination in 1963.
