New York.

John Jay, first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, was born in New York City in 1745. His family moved to Rye, New York, shortly after he was born.

Jay served on the Supreme Court from 1789-1795, when he was elected Governor of his home state. President John Adams attempted to entice Jay back to the Court, but Jay refused, claiming the Court had little power or prestige. He had also complained about the circuit riding duties incumbent upon the justices at that time, and was reluctant to experience those conditions a second time.
