Principally The Beatles, he was also in the precursors to the Beatles - the Quarrymen and Silver Beetles. After the Beatles, he performed with the Plastic Ono Band - essentially a collection of musicians which differed for each performance.
The Quarry Men, named after the high school (Quarry Bank Grammar School) that most of the members attended. Paul McCartney and George Harrison joined that band, the other members gradually quit, and the band eventually became the Beatles. (Some of the surviving Quarry Men reunited in the 1990s, to perform their old repertoire.)
The Quarrymen
The Quarryme
The original lineup of John Lennon's Quarry Men included Lennon (guitar), boyhood friends Peter Shotton (washboard), Nigel Whalley and Ivan Vaughan (who shared tea-chest bass duties), schoolmate Eric Griffiths (banjo), and drummer Colin Hanton. Ivan Vaughan was a schoolmate of Paul McCartney, who introduced him to Lennon.
His first band was Johnny and the Moondogs, then the Quarrymen, then the Silver Beatles, then the Beatles, all of which were different names for the same band. Then he was a solo artist.
His first band was the Quarrymen named for the school he was attending. Paul McCartney joined the band after the second performance. George Harrison then became the lead guitarist. Stuart Sutcliffe was the bassist when the band became the "Beatles" Pete Best was the first drummer. When the band went to Germany Sutcliffe stayed in England, McCartney became the bassist. Ringo Starr replaced Best as the drummer.
