Caesar, Pompey and Crassus formed a triumvirate to put an end to political strife. Crassus' payoff was to take the campaign against the Parthians who were raiding the Roman province of Syria. It was a disaster in which Crassus lost his life and the eagles of the destroyed legions. It remained unfinished business. After Caesar had defeated Pompey in the subsequent civil war, he established himself as dictator for life to settle the ongoing competition for power amongst the aristocracy. Having stabilised Roman affairs, he turned his attention to the Parthian problem, urged on by his dream to outdo Alexander (everyone who had big ideas wanted to do this) by gaining Alexander's old empire in the east, and be remembered as conquerer of both east and west, which Alexander hadn't achieved. He prepared an expedition to conquer Parthia, but was assassinated on the eve of his departure.
Julius Caesar did not accomplish the campaign to Parthia. He as killed before he left for the campaign.
