Beatrice Armstrong
Louis Armstrong's sister worked for my grandmother for many years as an aid in her home caring for 2 senior ladies. Yes, her name was Beatrice but everyone called her Selena or Doll. She was quite a character. A hard working woman on her job and a weekend warrior. When she didn't show up for work on Monday morning, my grandmother knew she was in jail. She would bail her out on a regular basis. Many times she spent the night on a pallet next to my great grandma's bed because she was scared to go home. She had a biracial daughter. Her name was Dorothy. She grew up playing with my Aunt Linda and babysat her in the afternoon while Selena did her work. I have pictures of her with my family.
Beatrice was hit by a truck on New Orleans West Bank Hwy. 90. She caught a ride to visit my (now grown) aunt's new baby. At the funeral (St. Louis Cemetery) my family were the only whites in attendance. Louis was not there but sent a huge bleeding heart made of roses. We never saw Dorothy again but heard she was sent to New York to be raised by Louis. My family has thought of her many times. This story always comes up when we look through old family photos. We wonder what ever happened to this lovely girl. She should be around 70 years old now.
Beatrice Armstrong Collins was born in 1903 and died in 1987. Her brother, jazz great Louis Armstrong died in 1971 with his widow Louise following him 12 yrs. later in 1983. He couldn't have sent the flowers to the funeral that you speak of. What year are you speaking of dear because your entry is very, very confusing? I'll write back with more detailed info of what I know of the family.
She lived in Florida for many years with her common law husband and ran a gambling joint where she dealt cards. The people who frequented it were pretty bad characters, but she could always hold her own. She first went to Florida when she was a teenager answering an ad for a saw mill job. Louis Armstrong talks about it her frequently in his autobiography, "Satchmo: My Life in New Orleans." She eventually married Mr. Willie B. Collins and he died a year after she did in 1988.
His younger sister (born in 1903) was named Beatrice (later Beatrice Armstrong Collins)
NO. While it is possible for a Jew to have the surname "Armstrong", it is not likely. The two most famous Armstrongs are not Jews: Louis Armstrong (Sachmo) -- the Jazz musician -- and Neil Armstrong -- the astronaut who went to the moon.
