I'm not exactly sure what is exact inspiration was.
But my teacher told us that he was a teacher earlier in his life, and worked with a lot of children. That might of been his inspiration, basing Stanley on the life of a kid he might of seen with self-confidence issues. Or, he might of based it on his own childhood experience. His books do have one thing in common though, the antagonist of the story has self-confidence issues. And throughout the book are battling to face these issues, and conquer them.
