Poseidon's most know crime was sleeping with Medusa in Athena's temple, this enraged Athena and then turned Medusa into a horrible beast that if you looked into her eyes you turned to stone, snakes as hair and instead of legs she had a snake tail. In doing this Athena was making sure no one would ever look at medusa again.

If Poseidon did it there, it would have been the ultimate insult against Athena. It would have been like desecrating her most precious place, and she took it very personally. To continue with the myth...Athena must have been insulted by the act because she placed a curse on (the previously very beautiful) Medusa, and turned her hair into snakes and her gaze made men turn to stone.
