He also ordered that porches had to be built in front of houses and apartments so they could be used as firefighting platforms.

∙ 13y agoNero did all he could to keep up on events. However there was actually little he could do as the fire would seem to be under control and then flair up again. He was frustrated with the sense of helplessness as he watched his city burn. Being artistic, he likened it to the burning of Troy and began to compose a poem comparing the two. This was how the misconception that he "fiddled while Rome burned" came about. The word "fiddling" meaning doing trivial things to ill in the time.
