Odysseus was weeping on the shore of Calypso's island, feeling trapped and longing to return home. Hermes arrived to deliver Zeus's message that Odysseus must be allowed to leave the island and continue his journey back to Ithaca.
She is a nymph that has a "thing" for Odysseus and holds him on her island as her boy toy for, I believe, ten years. She, as Odysseus puts it, "craves him for a husband" but he refuses and is freed when Hermes comes bearing news from Zeus that Calypso must release him. Zeus is convinced by his daughter Athena.
