President Lincoln endured the pressure of ending the Confederate rebellion and saving the Union from destruction. As an off-shoot of the Union victory, slavery was abolished via the 13th Amendment to the US Constitution passed in December of 1865 after Lincoln's assassination in April of that same year.

"My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union"

He may not have as noble a man as generally acknowledged. He was fortunate it worked out the way it did, which fact seems to be the one that history remembers. With all due respect for Lincoln, the saving and reunification of the US was one of the greatest events in US history.
