IMPROVEMENT

Gen. Winfield Scott, at that time General in Chief of the Union Army and not president Lincoln offered Lee to be appointed as General Commander of the army of the Potomac. As correctly said above, he refused.

Lee, then was appointed to command to coastal defences in North Carolina.

After that he replaced Gen. Joseph Johnston as Commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, commission he held until his surrender at Appomattox, contemporaneously of the commission of General in Chief of the confederate Armies, office to which he was appointed on Feb. 6, 1865.
