Rosalind Franklin is best known for her X-ray crystallography image which were key in figuring out the structure of the double helix, credited to Francis Crick and James Watson and Brian Wilkin. She also helped the project by offering her opinion on the previous structures Crick and Watson and Wilkin created (the rumor is that when she didn't say anything about the double helix, Crick and Watson realized that they could be correct).

Franklin played a monumental part in the discovery which led to a Nobel Prize, but she wasn't eligible to win because she was dead due to complications from ovarian cancer at the age of 37 by the time it was awarded (prizes aren't awarded posthumously, nor for more than three recipients).

She was also know for being, for lack of a better word, a bit of a cow (thanks, in part, to Watson's depictions of her in 'The Double Helix').

Rosalind Franklin's work was important because she discovered the DNA when no one else could, then after that James Watson and Francis Crick added to her wonderful work(She was close to solve the structure of the DNA, she had even got the X ray diffraction pictures.)

Through her work and pictures of DNA done with x-ray chrystalography Watson and Crick were able to identify that the structure of DNA was in the shape of a spiral or double helix.
