'Old Rosy' commanded the Army of the Cumberland (Union) at the indecisive Battle of Murfreesboro (Stones River) from where he made his brilliant advance to Chattanooga. He then lost the Battle of Chickamauga, where only George Thomas's stout defence saved the army from total destruction by Braxton Bragg. Rosecrans was disgraced for his failure of leadership, with suggestions of cowardice/dereliction of duty, as he left the battlefield without any excuse. He was never appointed to any high command for the rest of the war.
