It entirely depends on the time. At the beginning of the war, Russia and Germany signed an agreement to split Poland and then they attacked from both sides. However, Hitler wasn't happy with only half of Poland and attacked Russia. They had to stop however at the battle of Stalingrad because it was winter and the Germans had almost no supplies and their gas was freezing in their tanks.
