The 1904-05 war between Japan and Russia is generally termed the Russo-Japanese War. To the surprise of many European nations, Russia was unprepared for this war and lost to Japan. Japan never declared war on Russia, they just attacked various Russian territories in East Asia.
Russia got out of the war through a document called Brest-Levosk that pulled them out because they were having a revolution in there own country and also they no longer had anyresources o keep fighting in the war.
Because they could not just start a war with was as there was a thing called the triple entente which was an alliance between Russia England and France
