On the first day of the Battle of Shiloh, the Confederates attacked the Union in a series of successive lines. At Shiloh, entire corps were assaulting the Federals in lines. General Hardee's Corps formed the first of these lines. Deployed 500 yards behind was the corps led by General Bragg. 800 yards behind Bragg, General Polk's Corps became the third wave of the assault. In reserve were the forces of General Breckinridge, who followed Polk within a short distance. In its totality, the Rebels mounted a daunting number of assault lines. Preventing an outright rout of the Federals was the rough terrain of the area that forced the lines to disconnect and fire at the Federals in the pattern planned by Confederate generals Johnston and Beauregard.
