Sir Edmund Hillary was an explorer and a philanthropist, as well as a navigator in WWII. However, he was most famous for being an accomplished mountaineer.
He was one of two men to be the first known people to reach the summit of Mount Everest. He acted as a guide for several other climbing expeditions on this same mountain and also traveled on expeditions to both the North and South Poles.
Also, he founded the Himalayan Trust, which was a foundation that became responsible for the building of schools and hospitals for the Sherpa people in Nepal.
