He purportedly slayed a dragon. Since dragons do not exist, it must have been some other animal, such as a crocodile, that he killed. We will never know. However, he is also famous for refusing a direct order from his superiors in the Roman army to persecute and kill Christians. That deed earned for him the crown or martyrdom as he was beheaded for not following orders.
