Tudor school discipline consisted exclusively of birching. Flogging with a birch rod (i.e. a thick heavy bundle of birch twigs) was applied to the naked buttocks of pupils who misbehaved or failed to learn their lessons. Pupils had to kneel and bend over a 'flogging block' to receive the punishment, which could be up to 50 strokes. The whole of the victim's bottom (including the anoperineal sphere) would be a mass of blood and raw lacerated flesh following the punishment.
Life for Tudor children in school was quite different from today. Education was primarily reserved for boys from wealthier families, who learned subjects like Latin, reading, writing, and arithmetic, often under strict discipline. Girls typically received little formal education, focusing instead on domestic skills at home. School days were long and demanding, with a strong emphasis on memorization and religious instruction.

We need some discipline for this school
They were treated as miniature adults in the sense that the same work ethic and discipline was expected of them as was expected from adults. Very little allowance was made for them 'still being children', and infringements on discipline were usually punished with a beating. This way of treating and training children was however not typical of only the Tudor period; it persisted in Western countries until the early 20th century and it still can be found in many other countries today.
