Germany sent a letter to the Mexican president, asking Mexico to declare war against the United States in exchange of German support to help in the reclamation of part of the territories lost during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). Specifically, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.

This letter, known as the Zimmerman telegram, was intercepted by British intelligence and shared with the US Government. The resulting scandal prompted the US involvement in WWI against Germany.
