Crawford, Madison's treasury secretary, was a prominent and popular politician from Georgia who had hoped to win the Republican caucus nomination in 1816, but was convinced by party leaders to defer to James Monroe. He felt that the nomination in 1824 was his by right, and he campaigned steadily throughout the Monroe administration, using the very considerable patronage resources of the Treasury Department as an electoral tool. However, he had minimal support outside of his home state of Georgia and to a lesser extent Virginia. His slim chances at the presidency were reduced to nil after he suffered a debilitating stroke in 1823.
He was a Republican who wanted to limit the power of the federal government.
