both are fine rifles. however, the garand is a semi-auto 8 shot, and the shooter can stay on target better. The K98 is a bolt action, meaning shooter has to take eye off target as he re-loads the K98. But the kar98 is very accurate so i think that you could pick the person off with the kar98 faster than m1 grand only if the other person is reloading. reloading a k98 does not take long since it has a clip. the K98 is similar to the 1903 Springfield rifle in that the 1903 also loads with a clip. Speaking from experience (Korea 1951) the M1 garand is an excellent shooter and if you learn how to shoot it most likely you will hit your target since you have 8 rounds semi-automatic and you DON'T have to take your eye off your target as with the K98. Having shot the K98 (mine) I find the open sight is not as good as the M1 garand peep-sights.
