Here at the Ozark Medieval Fortress in Lead Hill, AR our carter is the horseman. He is in charge of the draft horses and donkeys that we use while building our castle here. He harnesses them and directs them as they pull logs and carry stones.
At a basic level a carter is someone who worked with a cart. In a noble's household the carter was the servant who tended to the animals such as draft horses and donkeys and operated a cart to move goods and cargo.
A carter could also be a person who worked as a porter or laborer using a handcart or wheelbarrow.
