Watching Chariot Racing and gladiator fighting. Although spectator affairs such as mentioned were popular, they were only available for limited times and always in connection with some festival. For everyday leisure activity the Romans, both men and women, exercised with weights and fun competitions. The men, at least the younger ones, enjoyed wresting. In decent weather the Romans of all ages liked their ball games. In the open spaces sometimes called "gardens" they would get together and play various types of games involving passing the ball or pitching it to a partner. The rules and methods are unclear to us, but the Romans understood them. Indoor activities consisted of various board games, knuckle bones and many varieties of dice games.
