In WWI, the flamethrower was mildly effective, but suffered major technological setbacks. For instance, its range was very limited, and therefore the soldiers carrying the weapon had to close to wreak their unholy revenge on the enemy. Also, it was incredibly bulky and required one soldier to operate the gun and another to carry the tank. This meant a sharpshooter could easily destroy the two men before the weapon was even used.
It did have its perks however, as it could quickly and easily clear out any enemy position it could reach with a torrent of flames.
