a free man was someone who was not bound to his local lord. ordinary peasants (surfs)had to obey their lord, had to fight when he willed, had to give him a certain amount of their produce, and so on. in the end, you always had to obey someone, so it depends on your definition of freedom. however, the generally accepted definition of a free man in the middle ages was one who was higher than a peasant, was not bound to a landlord, and had an income in money.
