The needed a secure and stable operating system for large corporations
The primary reason for creating the NT family of operating systems was to provide a form of Windows designed, from the ground up, to be used in a business environment. System security was of cardinal importance, as was more robust connectivity features for local area network (LAN) based computing.

Stability was also important, so many of the ways the computer hardware and software interacted with the operating system had to be re-evaluated. This caused many compatibility issues between the 9x series of operating systems and the NT series, and is ultimately one of the reasons the 9x series was dropped from Microsoft's product line.
