The commander of the British forces at the siege of Charleston in 1780 was Sir Henry Clinton. Clinton commanded a force of 8,500 soldiers and 5,000 sailors and marines. His opposite number was Benjamin Lincoln, commanding a force of 5,446 members of the Continental Army and militia.The siege lasted from 1 April to 12 May 1780, when Lincoln was forced to surrender. Casualties for the British included 76 dead and 182 injured, and on the American side, 92 killed, 148 injured, with 4,650 men captured, including 3 signatories of the Declaration of Indepedence.
