There was a long-standing ban- with few exceptions, on secular music in the course of a Mass. the exceptions to the party line were Weddings- where some secular songs were allowed- at the discretion of the padres ( I would like to know if there was a music policy office- as existed with ( Rock) masses). as it was some parishes preferred purely churchly odes such as ( On this day, oh Beautiful Mother) a wedding Hymn, though it sounds more in tone for Mother"s day. - the other exeption- follow the flag! would be the inclusion of patriotic songs ( such as Battle Hymn) on the Fourth of July, for example. regular masses use hymns in the hymnal. There is still in some cases a movement against secular music even in weddings- it should be noted that Here Comes the Bride, and the recessional wedding march- both were derived from Operas. A Midsummer Night"s Dream, I believe the former, and the recessional came from Lohengrin. ( it"s Lohengrin, not Londregan, he"s not a Leprechaun!
