In the second half of the 1840s, potato blight destroyed the potato crop in Ireland. At that time it was a major source of food in Ireland. As a result of that famine, many people died and many left Ireland in search of a better life.
Between 1845 and 1852, Ireland went through the Great Famine. Over a million people immigrated to the U.S. due to the mass starvation and diseases.

They went to the US and other countries in search of a better life and to escape starvation caused by the famine. Other countries would have been seen as good places to go to have a better life, as they expected to be able to get jobs and better conditions than in Ireland.
