Confederate General Braxton Bragg, shared one problem with the former Union General George B. McClellan. Bragg continually overestimated the number of troops he faced against the Union in Tennessee. His concern for needing reinforcements hampered his offensive plans. While positioned at Tullahoma, Bragg and Lieutenant General Joseph Johnston managed to gather replacements for the Army of Tennessee. They came from other areas in the Western Theater and another 5,000 troops were added based on the conscription of men in Tennessee and Alabama. In total, Bragg received 10,000 more troops between January and May of 1863. This was welcomed by Bragg, however, the new troops only brought the size of his army to the same strength he had after the Battle of Stone's River.
