Bear baiting was a repugnant form of blood sport: a bear would be chained to a post in the ring, still able to move, but not escape, and dogs would be set on the animal. Spectators would bet on whether it would be the dogs or the bear that would survive the vicious fight that ensued.
Bear baiting consisted of chaining a bear to a post in a pit and setting hunting dogs on it. As it killed and wounded dogs, new dogs would be sent in. Henry VIII and Elizabeth I were both quite fond of watching this amusing spectacle, and it was popular enough that from the 16th century on herds of bears were kept for the purpose.
Bear baiting is commonly described as a medieval sport, but witch hunts are also described as medieval, which they were not. While it is relatively easy to get information on bear baiting after the Middle Ages, it seems rather difficult to get the same sort of information about it happening during the Middle Ages. I am not sure what to make of this.
